Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 2025
This Privacy Policy describes how the ByeByeDistraction Browser Extension ("we", "our", or "the extension") handles your information. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our practices.
Summary: We do not collect, store, or transmit any of your personal data to external servers. All data stays on your local computer.
Information We Do NOT Collect
The ByeByeDistraction extension does NOT collect:
- Your browsing history
- Personal information (name, email, etc.)
- Website content you visit
- Passwords or credentials
- Any data for advertising purposes
- Analytics or usage statistics sent to external servers
How the Extension Works
The ByeByeDistraction extension works in conjunction with the ByeByeDistraction Windows desktop application. Here's how data flows:
- Local Communication Only: The extension communicates exclusively with the desktop application running on your local computer (localhost:8742). No data is sent to external servers.
- Blocked Websites List: The extension receives a list of websites to block from your local desktop app. This list is stored temporarily in your browser's local storage.
- Blocked Events: When you attempt to visit a blocked website, this event is logged locally to your desktop application for statistics purposes. This data never leaves your computer.
Permissions Explained
The extension requires the following permissions:
- Access to all websites (<all_urls>): Required to check if a website should be blocked based on your schedule. The extension only reads the URL to compare against your blocked list - it does not read or modify page content.
- Storage: Used to cache your blocking settings locally in your browser for faster performance.
- Tabs: Required to redirect blocked pages to a friendly reminder page.
- WebNavigation: Allows the extension to intercept navigation to blocked websites before the page loads.
- Alarms: Used to periodically sync with the desktop application (every 30 seconds).
Data Storage
All data is stored locally:
- Browser Local Storage: Temporarily caches your blocking schedule and website list for faster performance.
- Desktop Application Database: Your schedules, blocked websites, and statistics are stored in a SQLite database on your Windows computer.
No data is stored on any external servers or cloud services.
Third-Party Services
The extension does not use any third-party services, analytics, or tracking tools. We do not share any information with third parties.
Children's Privacy
The extension does not knowingly collect any information from children. The extension is designed as a productivity tool for users of all ages.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of any material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy.
Your Rights
Since we don't collect personal data, there is no personal data to access, modify, or delete. You can uninstall the extension at any time, which will remove all locally cached data from your browser.
